Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss while a challenge for all, is an especially acute challenge when it comes to women. As a doctor working with female patients, I would attribute this largely to the social aspects of baldness in women. Women suffering hair loss are known to develop self-esteem issues as well.
Prevalence of hair loss in women has increased substantially over the past decades. A recent stat I came across estimated female hair loss as effecting about 30 million women in United States alone. (This was an estimate from the American Institute of Dermatology). Back of the envelope calculations suggest that this is about 1 in 5 women in the nation.
In this article, I have covered some of the key causes of hair loss in women, the diagnosing of the challenge, and finally treatments of hair loss in Ayurveda. I encourage you to read through and reach me through the form below for an initial consultation. My initial phone consultation is offered without a fee.
Key Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Some of the key causes of hair loss in women can be summarized as follows –
Medication. Side effects of medication you are presently taking. During the first consultation, this is one of the key pieces of information I discuss with my patients.
Poor nutrition. A lack of essential vitamins and minerals in your diet might be causing hair loss.
Infections – Sometimes infections also have can cause hair loss.
External factors. Certain types of treatments in beauty salons, may cause damage to your hair and the hair follicles. This could be caused by the improper use of heat irons, etc.
Diagnosing hair loss in patients
As a routine process, I recommend all women to regularly checking the pattern of your hair.
A physical diagnosis can easily highlight possible hair loss conditions.
A hair biopsy is sometimes needed to know the “root” cause of the problem.
In rare cases, there might be a need for a Blood tests to see if a medical condition is causing the hair loss.
Treatments of Hair Loss with Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a holistic treatment system – and hence all treatment in Ayurveda are based on the premise of a complete understanding of the patient’s body and mind factors – any of which may be causing the ailment.
Ayurvedic treatments for hair loss are very effective in most circumstances. Results can be seen in as little as 2 weeks.
Some of the treatment processes I use in Ayurveda are –
a) Dietary habits changes
b) All natural Herbal supplements
c) Shirodhara and Takradhara treatments – Shirodhara is an ayurvedic treatment in which a combination of various liquids (warm oils, milk, etc) and herbs is dripped onto the forehead and other energy (chakra) points of the head and neck
